怎样用一个小词让英文更简洁更地道？

先来读一个句子：

a) Longyan, an otherwise unremarkable city in Fujian province, has produced Zhang Yiming of ByteDance and Wang Xing of Meituan-Dianping.

先别继续往下读，花点时间想想你会怎么理解或翻译这句话。

你可能会理解/翻译成：

龙岩，福建省一个不起眼的城市，走出了字节跳动的张一鸣和美团点评的王兴。

大意差不多，但好像却差了点意思。下面这句可能更准确地译出了原句的意思：

要不是因为龙岩出了字节跳动的张一鸣和美团点评的王兴（这两位知名创业者）的话，它只是福建省一个不起眼的城市。

这时如果我们删掉句子里面的 otherwise，这句话就成了：

b) Longyan, an otherwise unremarkable city in Fujian province, has produced Zhang Yiming of ByteDance and Wang Xing of Meituan-Dianping.

它的翻译也大不一样了：

作为福建省一个不起眼的城市，龙岩出了字节跳动的张一鸣和美团点评的王兴（这两位知名创业者）。

由此可见 otherwise 一词对句子的影响：正是因为 otherwise，原句的翻译中必须用“要不是因为龙岩...的话，它只是...”这样的句式。

如果不用 otherwise 来表达原句的意思，我们可能会这样写：

c）If Longyan did not produce Zhang Yiming of ByteDance and Wang Xing of Meituan-Dianping, it would be an unremarkable city in Fujian province.

或

d）The only remarkable thing about Longyan, a city in Fujian province, is that it has produced Zhang Yiming of ByteDance and Wang Xing of Meituan-Dianping.

句子 c) 和 d) 分别用了 23 和 24 个词，而原句 a) 只用了 19 个词。原句表达的简洁性要归功于 otherwise 一词。

otherwise 最常见的意思是“否则、不然”，但在这个句子中的意思很难单独翻译出来，必须通过“要不是因为龙岩...的话，它只是...”这样的句式来译出这个词的精髓。

《柯林斯英语词典》的英英释义很好地解释了这个意思：you use otherwise before stating the general condition or quality of something, when you are also mentioning an exception to this general condition or quality。

这个意思读起来有点“别扭”，但恰恰是非常地道的用法，属于那种我们可以读懂但不会使用的用法。

从上面的句子我们可以提炼出一个句式：X, an otherwise Y, Z. 当我们想表达“要不是因为...，...只是...”或者“一提起...人们只能想起...”时，就可以使用这个实用的句式。

比如，一说起山西汾阳，很多人顶多只能想起汾酒这个白酒品牌，就可以说：

Fenyang, an otherwise unremarkable city in Shanxi province, is home to Fenjiu, a famous spirit brand.

再比如，要不是因为特里尔出了马克思的话，它只是德国西南部的一个无名城市，就可以说：

Trier, an otherwise little-known city in southwestern Germany, is the birthplace of Karl Marx.
