除了目前广为流传的四句版（宋代《漫叟诗话》），这首诗最早的版本（《世说新语》）是六句版：
煮豆持作羹，漉菽以为汁。
萁在釜下燃，豆在釜中泣。
本自同根生，相煎何太急？
汪榕培先生的译本如下：
An Off-Hand Poem
Green beans are stewed hot and slow;
Fermented beans have a different taste.
The stalks are burning hard below;
The beans are moaning in the pot sad-faced.
Out of the selfsame root both of us grow,
But why do you boil me in such a haste!
