Thanks largely to the fact that it was televised, we tend to look back at the Queen’s Coronation as the royal event that most lifted public spirits in grey, austere postwar Britain. But as Elizabeth and Philip: Love and Duty (BBC One) reminded us, six years earlier in 1947 the fairy-tale wedding of Princess Elizabeth to dashing Philip Mountbatten gave Britain a major morale boost at a time when it was desperately needed.

As befits a BBC programme marking the monarch’s 70th wedding anniversary, this was a respectful film, with presenter Kirsty Young keeping the tone just right for a “portrait of the platinum couple as they reach a landmark in their marriage”. From the outset the emphasis was on the love story, the air of romance and glamour that surrounded the wedding, and the significance and inspirational quality the match had on ordinary people’s lives.

This was a marriage that, even allowing for some retrospective rose tinting, truly seemed to symbolise a new beginning and a bright new future for Britain. Affectingly, a handful of couples who also tied the knot that year recalled it in terms of their own romances and enduring relationships. And whatever we were told about the spartan nature of the royal wedding, it was the other couple’s stories of ration coupons scrimped, second-hand dresses and cardboard wedding cakes that seemed most humbling, heard from the vantage point of our own consumerist age.

If the film’s first half focused on love and marriage, the second explored themes of family and duty. Above all, how in the succeeding decades the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh kept their relationship strong despite the changes wrought by accession to the throne and the constant demands made on family life by regular tours to the furthest points of the Commonwealth. The unhappier Nineties, when the spotlight shifted to the marital problems of their children, were dealt with too, but primarily as a sharp contrast to, and test for, their own remarkably stable relationship.

As a portrait of a marriage lived almost entirely in the public eye, there was never going to be much here that we didn’t know already. But in terms of reflecting the enormous public affection in which the Queen and the Duke have always been held, and the vital role this longest royal marriage in British history has played in securing the future of the monarchy, this was a film that said it all.
