How It Flows On music video (in progress)

How It Flows On Interview: Jin Wang

Q

What was your earliest experience with music?

JIN:I first came into contact with music when I was three or four years old. My father is a musician and composer. I listened to him play the piano when I was little and gradually started learning music.

Q

Why did you choose to be a composer instead of a performer?

JIN:I was interested in painting when I was a child, and maybe that is the reason why I frequently collaborate with artists. When looking back today, painting is a more creative method than playing instruments because the later has the standard of right and wrong. My father was very attentive when fostering my interests in music and encouraged me to improvise. He usually gave me subjects to play, such as “elephant”, or “little bear crossing the bridge.” I thought it was quite interesting. One day, my father asked me, “why don’t you start composing?” I thought it was not a bad idea.

Q

What triggered your collaboration with artists?

JIN:I met artist Yang Fudong at an event around 2000, and that was my start point of collaborating with artists. My first impression of him was very nice and I liked his works very much. He was working on the piece “Strange Heaven” at the time, and everything was ready at the time, and he kindly asked me if I would like to collaborate with him. I did not have much experience then and I was merely a college student; however, I had great interest in it so I went to see his work. That was a brand-new experience to me and also something I would like to try, so we began our first collaboration. We have had continuous collaboration afterwards. Some time later, artist Qiu Anxiong returned back to China from abroad and was preparing to make New Book of Mountains and Seas. I was introduced to him by Yang. After seeing the materials of the artwork, I was fascinated by it and started my collaboration with Qiu. We three also became good friends after then.

Q

What is the process of collaborating with artists?

JIN:I enjoy working with artists. Take Yang and Qiu as examples. Usually the artists provide subject matters and we will have deep communication over those materials. This is a crucial step because through this I can think about what music I should make to go well with the artwork. That can help me grab a direction, or an angle, and understand the artists’ intensions behind these works. Everything after that will come naturally once the first step is settled. As artists, Yang and Qiu rarely interfere my creations, especially on details. They respect me very much and leave me with enough space to create. We do have conflicts sometimes, and I insist if I believe is necessary, but sometimes I also make compromise after thinking more thoroughly. Generally speaking, it is a very pleasant, and helpful in either directions, to co-work with artists.

How It Flows On music note (clip)

Q

Could you tell us a little bit about your inspirations for making music in this exhibition How It Flows On?

JIN:The source of inspiration was an opportunity. When Qiu told me that the music will be played by two performers at two different locations, I came up with the idea of writing the music as if creating a dialogue. Technically speaking, the form of dialogue is dfferent from what we call polyphonic in music, and it is also very rare.

Q

You have been working with Qiu for many years and have made multiple music pieces for his artists. This work is not only a video work but also encompasses interactive installation with architectural elements. What is the difference between this collaboration and others?

JIN:The biggest difference in is space and the way we perform. We have a live performance this time, and it will take place at two different locations. We also have outside and inside space, and performers weill be positioned in different environments. Environments are essential for performers, such as the music made by Mongolians—they live open space and thus making music that conforms with the environment. I emphasize the personalities of the two performers this time. Even though the music was written in the traditional method, I have left space for performers to improvise. Liu Di, who plays the oboe, will be positioned at the Riverside Passage, while Shi Yucheng, the viola performer, will be at APSMUSEUM. Whether it is rhythm or strength, I do not want them to perform merely according to the notes; instead, they are encouraged to infuse their own thoughts and understanding of the piece. Each performer differs from another, and the communication between them is a kind of interaction.

Q

How It Flows On will be performed at different locations, which means your music will be played at different places and different times? How do you think the space will influence the music, or vice versa?

JIN: How It Flows On is a concept of time and space, and this will be demonstrated by the interaction between performers. Broadly speaking, I think everything is having dialogues with its surroundings. We look up into the sky and see the light from stars which actually existed in the past because of the distance between them and us. This is the concept of time and space. We are having a conversation right here in this room, but the distance of time and space could be overlooked because we are too close to each other. However, if we are seen by the microorganism, we are from different time and space. I think the essence of dialogue comes from difference and distance.

Q

One thing you would like to say to the audience to enhance their experience of How It Flows On, what would you say?

JIN:I think the true creators of art are the spectators. I think the open-ended exhibition which combines architecture, art and music can give people a brand-new experience from different perspectives.
