A variety of cultural courses, workshops for expats

Citizen Art Night School now provides foreigners with various courses in English. From April to June this year, Shanghai Public Art Museum is offering 11 courses in English to promote cultural understanding. Led by professional instructors, each course is available for up to 25 students. Classes start in the first week of April. Scan the QR code to register. Deadline is March 17.

01Jazz music
Acquire fundamental singing techniques and grasp the essence of jazz music. Groove to the infectious rhythms and explore the thrill of spontaneous improvisation. Instructor: Joey Lu is a pianist, vocalist, composer, band leader and arranger.

02Handpan & percussion

Use hand discs and percussion to truly sense the essence of rhythm and beat. This course will transform musical styles and rhythms from various regions into hand disc compositions, starting simple and diving deep.

03Shanghai dialect workshop

The workshop introduces Shanghai's culture by teaching fundamental Shanghainese words and phrases while emphasizing both instruction and practical application.

Instructor: Chen Ruiqi, also known as Chen Chuanji on stage, is a commentator from Shanghai Wu Yun Pingtan Troupe and director of Shanghai Folk Literature and Art Association.

04Tea art

The course explores how this traditional culture fosters cross-cultural exchanges and mutual understanding while cultivating friendship and cooperation among diverse nations and ethnicities.

Instructor:

Ran Ling is a national-level tea art master, tea maker, tea assessor, and scholar specializing in court tea making in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), an intangible cultural heritage item.

05Guqin (instrument)

The curriculum encompasses fundamental finger techniques, music score interpretation, artistic appreciation, and performance of renowned guqin (a traditional stringed musical instrument) pieces.

06Water sleeve dance

Be familiar with the features of a kind of Chinese opera performance and the interpretation and communication of traditional Chinese culture.

07Chinese dim sum

The course introduces the feaures of Jiangnan (regions in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River) refreshments. Learn about ingredients, traditional snacks of the Jiangnan region, and the art of making them.

08Martial arts

Explore the essence of Chin Woo boxing, which combines the strengths of different forms while emphasizing its distinctive features. We've crafted the 27-move Chin Woo mizong boxing by editing some moves from the 72-move routine. It's simple, practical, and easy to promote.

Instructor: Liu Botao, a national-level I referee and athlete, and a Chinese marital arts expert at national level V

09Blackpool sequence dance

Sequence dance evolved from the European traditional court social dance to modern ballroom dance. It features orderly presentation of two or more people, allowing participants to fully enjoy the pleasant experience brought by the combination of dance and music.

Instructor: Yao Maimai holds a bachelor's degree in international standard ballroom dance at China's Communication University.

10Calligraphy

By understanding the composition of brushwork, calligraphy, rules and ink methods, you can learn how to appreciate the classic calligraphy works of past dynasties and complete a piece of calligraphy work independently.

11Traditional handcraft

Teaching hand-sewing and embroidery, explanations and discussions of silk culture, embroidery culture, sachet culture, traditional Chinese patterns, and explanations of their meanings.

Instructors: Cindia Zhou specializes in advanced embroidery techniques. Ying Tang (Tina) and Jing Li (Maggie) are teachers focusing on intangible cultural heritage education. Chen Yant (Sally) is an asssistant and teacher of enterprise activities at Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions Staff School.
